THREAD: Pro-Ruto Mps in Mt. Kenya and elsewhere in the Jubilee world have been more prominent in media as Uhuru backers largely remain in the shadows. But now, as Uhuru elevates his backers, they will gain more prominence as the Ruto group fall. 1/
As you have already noted with the Senate changes, the fall of Murkomen will obviously lead to his shadowing. Yesterday, @WaihigaMwaura increasingly referred to him merely as ‘Elgeyo Marakwet Senator’. Yet, Waihiga kept referencing Poghisio as ‘Senate Majority Leader’. 2/
This might look small but it isn’t. As pro-Ruto MPs fall, so will be their fall in newsworthiness. They’ll increasingly fight for coverage in the fringes of mainstream media. This is because there’s a big difference between “earned media” and “paid media”. 3/
In politics, earned media comes by virtue of your elevated position among your peers. Paid media is what you get when you send a journalist Ksh10,000 to come cover your event. Tangatanga leaders must begin to have a lot of money. When was the last time you saw “Kiunjuri”? 4/
There’s “position power” that you get when you’re in authority. A std 3 dropout like Echesa dominated our consciousness because he was a minister. Where’s he now? This is the tragedy that awaits those losing their positions. It explains the bitterness and the court fights. 5/
Because most bills/motions are introduced to floor debate by Majority Leaders/Committee Chairs, they automatically get free/earned coverage. And they get more time to move the bills and motions. That’s more time to speak. That translates to prominence. Politics is prominence. 6/
So, as Uhuru men gets to positions of power being vacated by dethroned Ruto men; they will automatically get the power and prominence to push Uhuru agenda forward. At the same time, the now powerless Ruto backers will increasingly become whiners then recede into oblivion. 7/
It gets even worse. The fall in power is to be followed by depletion of perks and opportunities to make money. Private sector CEOs/MDs and parastatal heads will ignore your calls & there’s nothing you’ll do. Even Farouk Kibet will start ignoring you, check Khalwale’s call log. 8/
That means to sustain yourself politically you’ll revert to family savings & investments and that’s when you will know your happily wedded wife is not your relative. As stress goes up, even slayqueens will notice. They too watch TV, right? Hapo pia utakua na shida kiasi. 9/
I really hope betting on DP Ruto is a sure bet. But the court fights to retain the perks indicates people are realizing they may have chewed more than they can swallow. What’s happening now is important. What I love with politics is that it’s a self-sustaining ecosystem. /10
