There are a number of questions that Dr Charlie Teo should answer and these are very much in the public interest
1. Was public hospital surgery offered for Bella?
2. Why wasn’t the surgery performed at the Sydney Children’s Hospital where he has operating privileges? https://twitter.com/ozvascdoc/status/1260094756131987458
3. Could surgery have waited another week rather than giving dad (who reports that he had) only 4 hours to source funds?
4. Are patients recommended crowdfunding? If not, then why a disproportionately large number of campaigns specifically to fund surgery with Dr Teo?
5. What’s the breakdown of the surgical costs? Is his personal fee really $60K for debulking Bella’s tumour & $30K if surgery was to be aborted?
6. Multidisciplinary teams are the cornerstone of cancer care? Does he participate in MDT meetings? Who is in his MDT if he is in one?
7. Morbidity & mortality meetings are essential components of surgical practice. Does Dr Teo participate in M&M meetings with his colleagues at POW Private Hospital?
8. Does Dr Teo keep data demonstrating that his surgery has better outcomes than good palliative/supportive care?
None of these questions are intended to denigrate Dr Teo in any way. As a high profile public figure whose patients use public platforms to seek donations from strangers to pay for surgery, these questions are very much in the public interest.
