They say King Lobengula sold the "country" after tasting the sweetness of sugar...really? A king who could instruct a thousand subjects to bring him honey https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🍯" title="Honey pot" aria-label="Emoji: Honey pot"> with ease? And a lot of people still believe that? Are we that lazy to learn the real facts about our history.
As you know, British and Dutch (Boers) settlers had been fighting in South Africa for supremacy and when Cecil Rhodes and his expansionist appetite rose to the reigns...they wanted to colonize everything from Cape to Cairo, including The Kingdom of the Matebele in the North
White settlers sent Charles Rudd, Rochford Maguire and Francis Thompson (Translator) to King Lobengula to ask for mining rights in his territory. In the 1880s they were to go and offer an official deal in exchange of mining rights (NOT TAKING OF LAND)
Back in the South, Cecil Rhodes was under no illusion about the stubbornness of King Lobengula as his messengers were made to wait for a month before seeing the King. A Christian missionary (Charles Helm) who had earned Lobengula & #39;s trust helped to play "match maker".
"I have always been afraid of the difficulty of dealing with the Matabele King.He is the only block to central Africa, as, once we have his territory, the rest is easy the rest is simply a village system with separate headmen" Cecil Rhodes before the Rudd Concession in the 1880s
Rudd Concession 1888
The Rudd Concession is an agreement signed between King Lobengula and Charles Rudd that gave mining rights ONLY in the area under his authority to white settlers. The King was to receive below mentioned items as part of the deal https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤝" title="Handshake" aria-label="Emoji: Handshake">
These were the promises made by the British settlers when they convinced King Lobengula they had honest intentions and they were going to stick to the agreed items and protocol
King Lobengula was dealing with crooks who had bribed Charles Helm and also bribed 2 of Lobengula & #39;s most trusted...LOTSHE and SKOMBO... They convinced him to sign the deal on paper although it was different from the verbal agreement. Upon finding out he massacred their families
In 1893,at Gadade.. King Lobengula & #39;s army with 5 different regiments (ihlathi, isiziba, inqobo etc) attacked the pioneer column which had marched into his territory, breaching the agreement. This Anglo-Ndebele war proves he did not give away any land. Why would he go to war?
For obvious reasons, the invading white settlers were more equipped and they eventually repelled the attack and occupied Lobengula & #39;s throne. I& #39;m still to go deep into the disappearance of Lobengula but i have 2 more remarks to say about his role in colonization
A lot of people think King Lobengula could have prevented the annexing of our land, not at all. The Rudd Concession was simply about the British keeping other settlers out by claiming to have LEGITIMATE and EXCLUSIVE rights to the area between Limpopo and Zambezi
Colonization was inevitable, with or without the concession. The mystery surrounding Lobengula & #39;s death, Disappearance and the Cache of Gold he was said to have... Is interesting. Hope this helped demystify some things
