This week's #WednesdayWritingTips are about standing out from the slushpile.
No-one knows what will happen in the industry as a result of Covid-19, but if purse-strings get tighter, things may get more competitive as a result. So how can your story have the best possible chance?
1) Be funny, warm and uplifting.
No-one knows what will be trending, but it's a fair guess that light and upbeat stories are going to be in demand. People will not want to be depressed. If you have any upbeat WIPs, now is the time to whip them into shape.

2) Avoid the obvious
There will be many submissions focusing on staying inside, braving strange new worlds with killer viruses (for older readers), bereavement, etc. Perhaps focus your writing elsewhere.

3) Write energetically
It's easy to feel really worn down at the moment, emotionally, physically, creatively - and that can come across in writing. Give your text an energetic lift. Check each word to see if it is as 'big' and expressive as it can be.

4) Write escapistically
(That should be a word. I'm leaving it in).
Really transport your reader to another reality. Write something to whisk them away and forget what is going on outside the front door. Create an unusual premise and build a strong world.

5) Submit optimistically
We still need stories. People are still accepting. Things may take longer, but book sales are flying at the moment. Finish your story until it's the best it can be. Research well and submit strategically. Be full of hope. Good luck!
