On the Passing of Pascals Member Kota Miki

Cellist Kota Miki, a key member of Pascals, passed away on 28th April, 2020, at his furniture studio in Ina-city, Nagano prefecture. According to his family, it appeared that he had died from a heart attack the day before.
On the night of 25th, he had a remote meeting with other members of Pascals, and even enjoyed an online version of "Bar Miki” —- the band’s name for drinks party held in the musician’s hotel room whenever they went on tour overseas.
He seemed fine at the time, and emailed us a detailed meeting report the following day. It was so sudden that all members are still in shock, and utterly devastated.
Ever since Pascals was formed 25 years ago, Miki has enriched our music with the orotund wooden timbre of his cello. A member of his university orchestra, he infused his knowledge of classical music into his performance.
His kindness and gentle touch created great rapport within the band. For this, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Miki will also be remembered as an artisan with unparalleled talent and craftsmanship in furniture-making.
When he still had a studio in Nakameguro, Tokyo, he often offered it as a rehearsal space to Pascals’ members. I fondly recall him working with his tools right before rehearsals began. A day before the funeral, I was allowed into his studio in Ina-city.
His bedroom was like a music chamber. The walls were decorated with J.S. Bach's portraits and puppets by his father, a puppet-master. The score of Bach’s Cello Suite No. 6 in D major remained on his music stand. It felt good being there.
I cannot imagine Pascals without Miki. That’s all I can say at this moment.
May his soul rest in peace.
