MDNA is Madonna’s heartbreak album, shes in a really rough place at this time, and in the midst of the chaos of life and being Madonna, powerful and bold: in MDNA, she feels raw, vulnerable, and weak
Both albums are connected. Even the album covers are similar.

Self-titled was Madonna’s very first album, where she was young, free, and naive. Theres an upbeat, carefree vibe to this album.

With MDNA, M is broken here. Her name lost letters and is now MDNA.
This signifies that the once naive, bliss, and aloof Madonna is now broken, sobered by the harsh nature of reality, and she has a hard time handling it.
You can hear that ‘Madonna’ sounds more upbeat and cheerful, Lucky Star, Burning Up, etc. But in MDNA, there is a LOT of bass, and it feels a lot darker. Theres a nighttime feel to it. Take GGW and Im Addicted for example.
Madonna is blinded by her rage in MDNA, and its represented in the jagged editing of the album cover, making Madonna not in clear focus, but you can see what she’s feeling.

Madonna’s laying everything on the table in this album, and things are not supposed to make sense
Thats why a lot of people hated this album, they couldn’t understand it— the same way that Madonna couldn’t understand what she was going through in this point in her life. You’re seeing her life through her eyes with this album. If the album was shitty— her life was too.
However, she was hurting inside. So while a lot of the songs are dance and club songs: thats her job, but the bass and the dark feel of the songs show that while being happy on the outside, she is hurting and feels so raw while being so accessible to millions.
This is a genius heartbreak album and its so underrated. I think Madonna outdid herself with this album. She only showed her rawest emotions in a really layered form. The album was purposely structured to be confusing, to prevent anyone from really seeing the depth in it
Because then her hurt emotions would be easily accessible to opinions and judgement by people who are small minded. So she added so much symbolic layer in the songs, to bring depth, depressing lyrical content, and almost crys for help, whether it be musically or vocally.
Only people that could handle Madonna’s intense and extremely raw emotions could sympathize with this album, because they also feel the confusion, distraught, and agony that Madonna felt at this time in her life. And in turn: this album becomes a really important ...
... heartbreak album in history. Madonna really did her thing by creating an AMAZINGLY ELABORATE heartbreak album, and being so truthful and raw to her fans and those who truly loved her.
