After I got laid off, another outlet reached out to see if they could help. One hitch: they didn't have the capital to be able to take me on. They applied for a grant with my name on it so they could fund my summer internship. Today, they let me know they hired someone else. 1/3
This outlet received a major grant last week, one not attatched to me, which is likely how they can afford it. I fully understand that outlets can hire whomever they feel best fits their needs but they pursued me and worked to make it happen until they changed their minds. 2/3
I don’t need to tell anyone that being a young reporter is hard. I don’t want to be the girl who yells into the void on Twitter but how we treat emerging journalists matters. Situations like this makes it hard to feel like I will ever find my place. 3/3
They reached out re this thread and offered me the job. I owe it to them to acknowledge that they apologized. I owe it to the journalists who have felt seen by this to remind you that when a break does come it is okay to know your worth even when it is really, really terrifying.
I owe it to myself to be somewhere I can thrive. I ultimately turned the offer down.
