So the Nebraska governor has put out a gag order on the reporting of covid19 cases in the state. Numbers are no longer being reported daily, making it seem like we're going for days without an increase in cases or deaths. In fact, we've overshot our forecasted peak twice already.
Huge numbers of new cases are coming from meatpacking plants, and those numbers have been outright barred from being reported. But businesses are opening, an IN-PERSON election was held today, and Ricketts has convinced supporters that we're dealing better than everywhere else
The wealthiest businesses in my city are requiring workers to come back to work with no provisions in place involving mask- or glove-wearing. My mom works for a Berkshire Hathaway company whose CEO has spent the last few months not concerned about his employees, but rather,
furious that the store's products aren't being immaculately presented, and he is taking his rage out on his poorest workers. My own supervisor wants nothing more than for everyone to "suck it up" and go back to the office, even though we can easily work remotely 100% of the time.
My mom is close to senior age and is immunocompromised. Everyone I live with is either very elderly or otherwise immunocompromised, with overall fragile health. My mom shouldn't be risking herself for a job that has barely paid her for 30 years. I can't put my family at risk.
The lack of sense and the lack of compassion in my state and the people all around me is frankly disgusting. First we let panic and fear win, and now boredom and outright greed is winning instead at the expense of the less fortunate. How can these people live with themselves?
It's getting harder to find the motivation to work hard and be productive. Every day it feels like it matters less and less. But if I can push through the present, I can help more people later, and stick it to the people who seriously have it coming. We won't forget this.
