We are all flawed. We all do the best we can with the tools and talents we have. Some people, through circumstance and happenstance, manage to do a great deal of good, and become a driver of social change. For others, its not enough, and they demand more and more. 1/
Today, I witnessed a fierce advocate for the trans community in general, and for trans and NB kids in particular, get driven off of Twitter. A small cabal of self-styled activists decides that this advocate needed to change her approach to advocacy. When she pushed back, 2/
they ganged up and pushed harder. She had enough, and deactivated her account. I witnessed the self-congratulatory glad-handing and denigration of someone who could no longer defend herself. This by members of the same community for which she has been a vector to the ears of 3/
middle-class Canadians. For her years of selfless efforts, often at the expense of her own mental health, she was labeled a "Karen." I called out one of the ringleaders, and was told my response was virulent in nature. Ok, I can deal with criticism, but apparently they cannot. 4/
So, what did they accomplish today? Absolutely nothing beyond making it apparent that they have the right to speak on our behalf, to make demands as self-styled representatives of a non-monolithic community. I wasn't consulted? Were you? It's tragic. 5/
