When I read Bryan Adam's tweet this morning I thought he was specifically blaming wet markets & their customers (not all Chinese people) or meat eaters in general, but if you're racist or their victim it would easily be seen as a generalisation & blaming Chinese people in general
And ambiguity was made worse by talking about "virus-making", which sounds like Trumpian conspiracy theories about labs. Plus only a small subset of wet markets are wildlife markets too. So a bad, ambiguous tweet which even if well-meaning (& accurate) could still stoke racism
Most cases of viruses jumping from animals to humans happen in USA & Europe, the oldest known happened in China, recent famous ones were from Africa, the 1918 flu was from the USA - it's easiest and fairest to just blame carnists everywhere. It's a global problem, the fix is too.
