Last summer I did a thread on spurs players that people loved. Do people want another? Obviously things have changed quite a bit since then... #thfc
Cool. Have a bit of time. There’s going to be some repetition to what I said last summer when talking about attributes etc. I’ll include players I think could still be at the club/play tangible minutes next summer, or first teamers returning from loan etc
HUGO LLORIS:
At least one more season as first choice. When he joined, top 3 keeper in the world. As spurs have got better, hes made more errors. Still brilliant. Commands respect, incredible athleticism. Iffy decision making and loops his kicks which puts players under pressure.
PAULO GAZZANIGA:
Doesn’t command same respect, aura, or trust as Lloris. Good athleticism, can keep passes flat so they reach target quicker, more accurately, easier to control. But just doesn’t have that level of security/influence to be first choice. Good understudy
SERGE AURIER:
Provides the aggression, power and impetus on the right flank. Has mastered the deep first time curled cross. But can’t cross on move, or from different areas, ie byline. Not supple and very rash. Good dealing with cross field passes in air
KYLE WALKER-PETERS
Best right back technically at the club. Can carry the ball inside and out. Low centre of gravity. But plays like a talented academy player because of lack of first team football. Lacks presence re athleticism/aura. Needs prem loan or sold next season
TOBY ALDERWEIRELD:
Not comfortable as LCB as he struggles to carry the ball. Incredible drive pass and times tackles superbly. Reads game outstandingly but lacks athleticism. Signing a DM should give him one more year in first team
JUAN FOYTH
Most talented CB at the club. Can play both sides due to comfort carrying the ball in straight lines. Can pass out. Long legs means he can make good recovery tackles/blocks/interceptions. Lots of athletic potential. Prem loan and he would be one of best CB’s in Europe.
DAVINSON SANCHEZ:
Great last ditch defender. Very stiff and not as physically dominant as he thinks. Has his weight used against him when he charges in due to narrow shoulders. Not supple so not comfortable carrying ball/passing out. Needs to work on clearing crosses with left
JAPHET TANGANGA:
Similar body frame to Ledley. Powerful legs gives him good leap. Superb at remaining composed, dominant, and big in dangerous situations. Times blocks/tackles perfectly. Not much grace but excellent defender and extremely driven
JAN VERTOGHEN:
Best ball playing CB at club. Comfortable carrying out due to excellent technique and comfort moving his body. Can wrap passes with accuracy and pace. Reads game expertly. Now struggles with pace/power in high lines due to age. 1 more year, mid/low block and hes 👍
BEN DAVIES:
Mastered the wrapped pass infield. Can carry the ball but not drive so is good at producing from deep before he’s engaged 1 v 1. Steady and safe, really underrated but lacks aggression and intensity on and off ball. Good player, important part of the squad
DENNIS CIRKIN:
Firstly, biggest quads in football. Has same safety and composure as Davies but a more dominating aura/physical profile on and off the ball. Can carry it infield/outside, can pass deep/high up the pitch. Good technically, good physically and composed aggression
DANNY ROSE:
I don’t think he will be here next season but what a servant he’s been. He’s proven you can make up for certain deficiencies by having an aggressive mentality. Better technically than given credit for but sometimes was rash in final third. Been a superb player
ERIC DIER
Good passing forward through the lines, superb at shepherding players into areas to close their angle, before winning the ball. Powerful in straight lines, but struggles turning. If he can regain mobility, can go back to top class DM. Will prob be CB though (same issue)
OLIVER SKIPP:
A pest for oppo players, constantly snapping away at you. Excellent at sticking to you like a shadow, but his lack of a stride/power means if players get space away from him, he can struggle to make it up, hence lots of last ditch tackles. Takes care on passes
HARRY WINKS:
Superb passing and receiving at angles to keep momentum going/retain ball in certain areas for a period of time. Can drive. Small legs/eagerness means struggles to cover/make up space on transitions. His aggression is good winning ball in tight areas eg vs Man City
MOUSSA SISSOKO:
Thrives in transition. Very vertical/athletic which fits current cycle of football. Excellent role filler, covers right side well and his power can drive team forward on/off ball. Superb running ahead of ball, but lack of composure in final third. Not supple
TANGUY NDOMBELE:
Most creative midfielder in the world, and completely unique. Always looks to play forward and finds angles on forward passes ive never seen from another player. Finds a new way to turn every time. Hopefully his uniqueness doesn’t harm his ability to run/stay fit
GIOVANI LO CELSO:
More similar to Lamela then Eriksen. Comfortable vertically, but plays in short sharp bursts of intensity. Doesn’t have same angles/tempo as Eriksen so Spurs needs runners beyond him for him to thrive. Superb straight line dribbler, can thread passes. WILL score
GEDSON FERNANDES:
Creative dribbler, can play behind and ahead of the ball. Versatile. Good runner, good dribbler. Very good technically. Can strike a ball well but not a finisher or a final pass player. Massively underrated. Could provide midfield control to team
RYAN SESSEGNON:
Should be a LB. Doesnt have power/assertiveness/style to score the type of goal elite wide forwards have. But has good stride, excellent technically, and thinks ahead which is why he goes past players. Could be a world class LB but needs to be more assertive
DELE ALLI:
Play him with runners beyond him, with Kane, and he will score/create. So creative but very loose, so needs to be at end of build up, not involved. Doesn’t play over longer distances, so find him in pockets/put players around him, in final 3rd, he will thrive
JACK CLARKE:
Reminds me of Lennon. Doesn’t have the driving runs/style to carry the ball up the pitch so prefers to receive high and wide and face his man up. Can turn sharp and deliver on end of a burst. Will offer a different type of threat. But should get another loan
SON HEUNG-MIN:
When no time to think, has space to drive into/work with hes world class. Intense, can face players up, and provide a variety of end product off both feet, inside/outside box. Can run in behind, or receive deep to feet. Lack of decision making, id play him on right
STEVEN BERGWIJN:
Most secure final third player on ball except Kane. Can go past his man both ways, both sides. His ability to retain the ball is why I’d play him coming in from left, and Son right. Explosive. Smart. Can carry ball up pitch and can score ‘X’ factor goal
ERIK LAMELA:
Intense, direct, can drive in straight lines in short sharp bursts and thrives in crowded areas, can thread passes, all like Lo Celso. But struggles to change tempo and doesn’t receive in many angles, again like Lo Celso. Huge part of squad
LUCAS MOURA:
Should play on right. Thrives in chaos with no time to make decision.
Can drive team forward. Not silky but skilful and can push and run. Mastered the ferocious finish across keeper. Intensity, work rate but lacks composure and decision making with time to think
HARRY KANE:
Most complete striker in the world. All types of goal, aggressive, can pass, drive, superb first touch, can play deep or high. Needs to make more runs into box like before but he’s still one of the best. Guaranteed 30+ if can stay fit (this is a worry)
TROY PARROTT:
Has the aura, assertiveness, physicality, intelligence and technique of a first team men’s footballer. Not sure he was ready for first team at spurs last year due to reliance that would’ve been put on him, but must get regular minutes next season or a loan
JOSE MOURINHO:
Still world class manager. Adapts to what he has, but impossible to implement a system this season. Only (?) for me is if he accepts mentality of modern day player. But as a coach, no doubt, and youll see vertical, aggressive, creative, quick combinations next year
Thread done. Even more has changed than I thought. Happy to go over any of it 👍 #thfc
