Omen of death
Strange sounds on a dark night, In Sri Lanka, a particular sound that has struck fear in the hearts of the rural folks is the sound of the Ulama or Devil bird, is a cryptid of  #lka said to emit bloodcurdling human-sounding shrieks in the night from the jungles.
The Folklore
A man killed his own child because he was dubious of its parentage; he then used remains of the child to make curry. The mother discovered what her husband had done and transformed into a devil bird making a cry of grief which sounds exactly like a boy in torture.
In the world
This predatory bird, which is also known as the forest eagle owl, is found in a swath of South Asia and Southeast Asia. It is about 21 inches in length and has heart-shaped spots and prominent black-and-white ear tufts that give it a suitably eerie appearance.
In Sri Lanka
The spot-bellied eagle owl is the largest of the 12 species of owls found in Sri Lanka. Distributed across all parts of the Island, in both dry and wet zones. Sightings of these are rare, Unlike many wild creatures, this one will make its nests in thick jungle only.
Habitat
Ulama occupy tree holes or return to previously abandoned stick nests in the thick forests, laying a single egg and taking turns keeping a watchful eye until the chick sets it's own. As the forest habitat of this bird continues to degrade, its future hangs in a balance.
The ecology
This owl preys on a wide range of creatures, including some fairly large mammals, birds and reptiles. Although they hunt mainly at dusk, whole encounter of the hunt is over in a moment while flies silently through thick jungle habitat on wings that span over a metre.
