I don't disagree that thoughtful apologies can happen and that people can grow. This, for me, was never about one person being honest in public. This was about a larger conversation - one of responsibility and gatekeeping and the public's general short term memory. /1
Like magpies, it seems most of you just wanted something basic & flashy to pay attention to and then went all gladiator audience when that thing "messed up". Pretty gross that AR got like ten thousand more followers in like two days - proof that ya'll just want drama and sport /2
I'm interested in folks - including AR - not dropping the core of what this problem is: one of who gets airtime in food media, one of how political food is and always will be, one of the personal responsibility we (should) agree to when we take up space in this field / 3
I struggle a lot w how to navigate this work in the actual way AR projected -I loathe selling myself & the fact that I have never wanted to "brand" myself means that it has taken me 50x's longer than someone like AR to build a career I can actually survive/support my family in /4
but one thing I have tried to be cognizant of, not always succeeding, is my lack of education, my lack of true understanding about what other people's experiences have been & how, no matter how I struggle w/ my career and all my frustrations, those frustrations are privileged/5
There are unlimited connections to be made from (but bigger than) the"AR Problem",aligning squarely w things like our inability to care that C'19 is killing blackpeople at a terrifying rate compared to w's, or to focus too long on 2racists murdering an unarmed black man in GA. /6
you think no? you're probably white and should take that apart for yourself. you think it's a crazy brainwashed liberal plea to equate one recipe writer to how much our country routinely dismisses the value and contributions and actual LIFE of POC? You're the problem. /7
unless we can hold OURSELVES accountable to read these seemingly small infractions (like AR's) right & FOCUS&UNDERSTAND the ACTUAL problem instead of just bandwagon jump by choosing a side & then forgetting about it altogether after it's all said&done, then we're pretty fucked/8
I don't believe in "cancelculture" - it's the thing I loathe the most about social media. But I do believe in sitting w an idea longer than a twitter storm & working hard to have the deeper conversations w the people around you to make sure that the truth of theproblem is outed/9
That's my 2cents - more disappointed in the general public than AR. Seems like we'll always be faced w opportunities to move forward in justified&educated&correct ways. But the majority will choose the shit, the dirty-can't-wash-the-stank-off-small-minded-high-school-level shit.
