/9 Thread about WRITING IN CORONA: 1) ACQUIRING: editors are still buying books! We need books for 2021/22 so pls don’t feel as though publishing has shut down bc it hasn’t! I am currently waiting to hear back on an offer, & know of deals being done every week. 2) SALES it is
/9 of course a hard climate out there, BUT books are still selling! Particularly in supermarkets & online. You can support local bookshops by ordering from them online too. We have seen big lifts in ebook sales lately & I personally have been buying TONS on my Kindle. It’s not
/9 the case that books are being released into nothing-ness - the readers are still there so keep writing! DEBUTS: it is a hard time to be a debut, I think everyone knows that BUT everyone will know that your book published into this time & your next book will get another
/9 chance - publishers are people too & we know that external factors mean some brilliant debuts won’t reach the heights they deserve YET. As an editor, the majority of the time I sign up writers who I want to work with for more than one book - writing is a career not a one-off
/9 so not everything always rides on your debut, esp at the moment. So many authors have seen success with their 2nd/5th/8th books! So keep going. MEANING: I have times at the moment where I feel like what I’m doing is pointless. But then I lose myself in a brilliant book &
/9 remember how powerful books are - for our mental health, in particular. They’re the only form of travel at the minute, & without being able to read I truly think I’d go crazy. If you’re a writer remember you are giving a reader that experience, & it is worthwhile. Books do
/9 matter. FUTURE: good things will come out of this. New online events mean those who can’t get to festivals can enjoy talks, & I hope these continue after lockdown. So many authors are being generous and giving debuts a leg-up. It has levelled the playing field a bit. For
/9 anyone struggling to write or worrying about their book, have faith that things will get better and that what you’ve written counts. Publishing is a great industry & it’s not going to collapse - as long as authors keep writing those brilliant books! So pick up your pen (or
/9 open up your laptop, more likely...) and tell yourself that you can do it! If you have questions my DMs are open too. I can’t read your work unless officially, but I can answer questions. Good luck and hope this motivates somebody out there https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💫" title="Dizzy symbol" aria-label="Emoji: Dizzy symbol">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💫" title="Dizzy symbol" aria-label="Emoji: Dizzy symbol">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💫" title="Dizzy symbol" aria-label="Emoji: Dizzy symbol"> https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="📚" title="Books" aria-label="Emoji: Books">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="📚" title="Books" aria-label="Emoji: Books">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="📚" title="Books" aria-label="Emoji: Books">
