with the upcoming release of story of seasons: friends of mineral town, here's a quick, short thread on the history of the harvest moon games, and why they're now under the name story of seasons! (1/6)
marvelous is the company that makes the original bokujō monogatari/story of seasons games. starting in 1996 they were partnered with natsume for the american release of their first game, localized as 'harvest moon.' (2/6)
natsume continued to translate and distribute the games under the name 'harvest moon' until 2014, when marvelous announced that their american publishing branch, xseed, would handle the localization of the games from now on. (3/6)
however, natsume still held the rights to the name 'harvest moon' and, petty bastards that they are, decided to keep the name. this forced marvelous and xseed to use a new name for the series going forward: story of seasons. (4/6)
natsume, meanwhile, started developing their own farming games under the harvest moon name, which is why fans of the series saw a drastic shift in art style in 2014/2015 with the release of harvet moon: the lost valley. that same year, marvelous released story of seasons. (5/6)
so there you have it, i hope that clears up any confusion about the difference between harvest moon and story of seasons! see y'all this summer when the fomt remake drops! 🐮 (6/6)
