A rad prof at my uni leaked a zoom video on youtube from the uni's senate council mtg, and omg it's juicy & outrageous af.

A prof asked if the president ($1.5mil) & basketball coach ($8mil) are willing to cut their salaries as shared sacrifice after 1400 workers got furloughed.

the spineless provost: "we're trying to avoid pay cuts for everyone. it's the last thing we wanna do for anyone. also the healthcare workers are temporarily furloughed."

If pay cut out of $1.5mil/yr hurts you, there is something very very wrong with you.

it gets worse. Ready?

Spineless provost: "they are eligible for unemployment. I've seen calculations that indicate the take-home pay with the
generous unemployment is equivalent to a salary of about 58k dollars/yr"

And that's the reason the president & the basketball coach should keep their pay?

Another prof: "actually, top researchers at some colleges are excepted to face 10% pay cut, so your point is not true. I wanna know what sacrifices are the top paid admins at this uni willing to make if faculty are sacrificing salary"

Spineless: "Idk what you're talking about"

The Spineless Provost continues to say that while he acknowledges some profs' contracts are shifting from 12mo to 10-11mo, "the rest of that with all respect is a rhetorical question"

Yes, you read it right. He said "rhetorical questions"

In sum, the answer is a hard no. the president who makes $1.5mil/yr & the basketball coach who makes $8mil/yr have no desire to share sacrifice by transferring a portion of their salary to those workers who have been furloughed.

PS: I purposely didn’t share the details i.e., the video link & the participants’ names out of my respect for the privacy of those profs who were asking very important questions to the provost. I”m not sure they know the video is out in the public domain. I get curious minds...

...wanna know all the details. But pls know my goal of the thread is to spread the awareness so that y’all know these things are probably happening behind closed doors at your uni too. So I hope you use this to reflect on where you are. And remember, there ARE awesome profs...

...everywhere, like those who were asking the provost what the top admins were willing to do to share sacrifices with furloughed workers. Find those profs, ask them what can be done to change!
