Fauci is always going to err on the side of prolonged lockdown. That's his job. He is not answerable to the American people, nor is he responsible for balancing various factors in reopening. He's an epidemiologist -- he only bears blame if he were to go-ahead faster reopening.
The reality is that the feds are receiving health information and medical care capacity information from the states, because governors are both answerable to their constituents and have more granular data than the feds. That means that states should be responsible for policy.
That does not mean that Fauci is wrong or bad or anything of the sort. It means that he is doing his job, and that it is the job of policymakers to MAKE POLICY.
Fauci acknowledges as much in this exchange: https://twitter.com/cspan/status/1260237842095226882
