THREAD: 🧶🧶🧶 of 13.

. @NYCMayor's relentless assault on the safety and dignity of homeless New Yorkers continued unabated last night.

At 96th Street the subway closed at 1am.

There were no outreach workers.

But there were lots of @NYPDnews.

🧶/2

The police cleared the station but there were no outreach or @NYCDHS workers to talk with folks as they were kicked out.
🧶/3

@NYCMayor has touted the "success" of his massive subway-clearance policing operation.

But we saw multiple people at this stop with simply nowhere to go.

Temps dropped to the low 40s. It was very cold.
🧶/4

From 96th Street we went to 30th Street intake.

On Monday, Commissioner Banks said @NYCDHS would no longer force people through 30th Street for intake after they were cleared from the train.

Outreach workers would do "direct placements" instead. https://twitter.com/i/status/1259523229791793152

That's not what we saw.

During the short time we were @ 30th St we saw about a dozen school & mini-buses drop people off.

Kicked off of trains, placed on buses, kicked off buses & left at 30th Street intake.

What @NYCDHS officials say to the press often isn't true.
🧶/6

After leaving 30th Street we found yet another notice of a street sweep, this on conducted earlier in the day.
🧶/9

It's of note that @CDCgov guidance says not to clear encampments during the pandemic.

Support people where they are. Offer individualized rooms.

@NYCMayor has refused to listen to the CDC guidance, and dozens of these sweeps are done each week across NYC.
🧶/10

Waging war on street homeless folks in an effort to get them out of public view is draconian & shameful.

It's a legacy similar to that of notoriously vicious & anti-homeless NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

And, now, it's the legacy of @NYCMayor.
🧶/11

COVID-19 is a very dangerous infection, and homeless people face significantly heightened risks of severe and fatal illness.

@NYCMayor could provide 30,000 individual hotel rooms with individualized bathrooms to support the survival, safety and health of homeless folks.
🧶/13 [end]

@NYCMayor needs to stop the draconian and paternalistic BS, and decide that the survival of homeless people is a priority.

He's not there yet and we are seeing the frightening effects of his perspective and decisions.
