I'm not sure that America can be rescued from the illiberal forces working against it, on both left and right. But, before we go, can we get "home" and "hone" right? You home in on something; you hone a knife, or argument. Thank you!
Someone said, "Now do 'uninterested' and 'disinterested.'" I have done so many times, but will again: If I am uninterested in a case, it means that the case does not interest me. I find it boring. If I am disinterested, it means I have no stake in the case. I am neutral.
Here is a really old-fashioned one: There used to be a distinction between "in behalf" and "on behalf." A handful of us still observe it. I am testifying in behalf of Smith -- in his favor. I am testifying on behalf of Smith -- in his stead. Sick in bed, he can't be here.
Since I’m on a little kick ... There used to be a distinction between “healthy” and “healthful.” About three of us still observe it. “Healthful” means “conducive to health.” Your breakfast isn’t healthy — it’s healthful — but it could make you healthy. #DinosaurTalk
When you are “nauseous,” you give nausea to others — leaving them nauseated. #LostCauses
It has come to my attention that people are using “nonplussed” to mean “unfazed,” “undaunted.” Actually, it means utterly perplexed. Funny how misunderstandings creep in (and, of course, they are sometimes rendered permanent).
