79% of unemployed or furloughed people support keeping the lockdowns going even at the expense of jobs--actually *higher than the general population*.
"Open up" has always been about small biz owners, not the workers whose bloody shirts they& #39;re waving. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/05/12/2-big-warning-signs-trump-new-coronavirus-poll-signs-he-doesnt-seem-want-see/">https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/...

I feel for every one of those business owners, and maybe they& #39;ve got the right of the policy discussion. But stop claiming this is about their workers who want to work. It& #39;s not. It& #39;s about the bosses, who shouldn& #39;t claim to speak for their employees.
Also, drop the "elite" claim--this is literally about bosses with more money/power/social capital who want to end lockdowns, while workers with less money don& #39;t.
This may have something to do with the fact that employees are likely to be related to, or in close contact with, more "essential" low-wage workers who have died from this disease, while employers are more likely to know other affluent people who can work from home, and haven& #39;t.
There are still arguments in favor of opening up. But "Pointy-headed, out-of-touch elites are forcing these lockdowns on salt-of-the-earth ordinary workers who just want to work" is not. If we open up, it will because capital-owning elites trumped the desires of said workers.
