I have reported on many horrible things, and am v fortunate to be safe at home now.

But I feel utterly shaken by news from Kabul, and haunted by the image of gunmen bursting into a maternity ward and shooting dead newborns, new mothers and women in labour. The utter horror.

All my thoughts today are with the bereaved in Kabul and Nangarhar, my colleagues there who have to confront evil and danger so regularly in their daily work, and every Afghan for whom bloodshed is a daily inescapable reality, and peace such an elusive dream.
