Why do all-women movie remakes fail so badly?

Why does every Hollywood action movie since the 90’s have a love interest/family drama in it?

Why is John Wick so popular?

What are the many lessons you can learn from storytelling for men vs women?

First, realize that we live our life through stories

Our brains work through story and narratives

The stories we tell ourselves become our reality

This is why it’s so important to understand male vs female storytelling

Because it explains the differences between men & women
There are fundamental differences between how men and women experience stories

Hollywood movies are just one example of this (albeit an obvious one)

The difference can be seen clearly in literature, commercials, friendship, work, love, dating & sex

Important to know this
Let’s use 2 well known tv series to explain some things

One for men & one for women

The A-team and The Bold & The Beautiful (TB&TB)

Not the most recent series, I know, but they explain it perfectly

So what are some of the biggest difference between the two?
Character vs Plot:

Men’s series like the A-team are plot focused

There isn’t much character development going on

BA Baracus isn’t going through a slow process of self discovery

Each episode they see a problem → do something smart → guns blaze → problem solved

Story over
Women’s series are character focused

There’s never that much happening in TB&TB

The focus is on what the characters are experiencing as things happen

The drama of a break up can be smeared out over 5 episodes easily

It’s a continuous story of emotion without a clear plot
Major difference between the two

Is that the A-team each episode is a clear story on itself

Even if you’ve never watched A-team, you can watch an episode and follow it easily

Can’t do that with women’s series like TB&TB

Every episode is part of a interconnected complex whole
The number of characters is also vastly different

The A-team has 4 and they are all shallow stereotypes

There’s the muscle man, the smooth guy, the smart leader & the crazy guy

TB&TB has dozens of characters in ever changing lineups

All with personal backstory & development
BA baracus was an angry muscleman in the first episode

He still was the angry muscleman in the final episode

Still with the same catchphrases (I AIN’T GETTIN’ ON NO PLANE!)

In TB&TB there is tons of character development for each character

Sometimes they change dramatically
Let’s go through a few more differences

Each point, take a moment for yourself

Think how this difference can be seen in the A-team vs TB&TB

Or in any other man vs woman tv series

(I’m skipping some examples to keep the pace in this thread going)
Story vs Conclusion:

If you tell a story for men. Focus on the conclusion

If you tell a story for women. Focus on the story

Men want a clear story with a clear conclusion

Women love stories within stories with no conclusion

Character development with no definite plot
Movies for men often have a clear ending

The world is saved, the end

Not important what happens after that

Women’s story often have implied continuation

They finally get together and their story has only just begun

Women don’t want it to end, they want it to keep going
Linear vs Tangent

Men love linear stories

“Frodo needs to get to the vulcano”

It’s ok if there are side stories (all with their own clear linear path)

But in the end it’s about Frodo → Vulcano

Men don’t want anything added into the story that doesn’t serve this plot
Women love tangents and substories

Frodo needs to get to the vulcano

But wait, is Aragorn in love with his elvish gf or with the Rohan blonde?

OMG did he just kiss her?

And now he’s getting back with his ex? OH NO HE DIDN’T!

Is anyone still paying attention to Frodo?
See for women the Frodo → vulcano thing isn’t that important

All the character developments and intrigues that happen along the way

Are what is really important for women

In fact there’s a part of women that hopes Frodo never reaches the vulcano

Because then the story ends
Intermission:

Movies & books are merely a reflection of how we experience life

How we experience relationships & sex

Action vs Emotion:

If two people get into a fight in a movie

And one shoots the other

Men are interested in what the consequences of the shooting are for the plot of the movie

Women are interested in how the person feels about having killed someone
Men care about what happens

Women care about what people are feeling (as things happen)

Action vs emotion explains why since the 90’s all action movies had love interests/fam drama

Hollywood studios wanted to also tap into the female audience

A one size fits all movie format
This also explains why John Wick is such a popular franchise

Men absolutely hate these stupid love interest/family drama side plots that add nothing to the story

For men, the love interest has to be like old school James Bond

Get the job done, get sexy woman as reward
Hollywood studios added love interests in an attempt to create an one size fits all concept

Instead they got an one size fits none

John Wick is the only franchise that didn’t include a love interest

Pure action driven plot

Action oasis in a desert of shitty love interests
All-female cast remakes of movies try to make women fit into action driven plots

The female audience doesn’t care because the plot is too action driven

The male audience isn’t interested because it just adds more unnecessary drama compared to the original
John Wick succeeds because it gives one audience (men) exactly what they want

All female remakes fail horribly because they give everyone what they don’t want
Clear morals vs Emotionally charged:

Men want clear morals in their stories

The good guys winning over the bad

The hero learning clear lessons

The hero conquering his fear

Any character development has to be an moral evolution

Character development serves the plot
Women want emotionally charged events

The girl leaving her faithful (but boring) husband

And running off with the thrilling bad boy

Very morally ambiguous

But highly emotionally charged

The plot serves the characters emotions
Take a moment here to notice how these preferences can clearly be seen in:

- Male vs female friendships
- Male vs female views on dating
- Male vs female experience of sex
- Male vs female workplace behavior
- Male vs female hierarchies

It’s present in everything we do
So is it impossible to write stories that speak to both men and women?

No of course not

Many popular series appeal to both male and female audiences

Series like How I Met Your Mother

It is possible to walk the middle road

There are successful compromises
Stories that appeal both to men and women usually have enough characters for there to be intrigue and drama

But not that many that they seriously distract from the plot

4 to 6 main characters (plus a few recurring support characters) seems to be the perfect amount
It’s a tight rope balance, but it can be walked successfully

Which is unfortunate really

Because it means every Hollywood producer is now trying to walk it

Which is why many modern movies are monstrosities without direction
The genre where it’s most difficult to appeal to both men & women?

Romantic & erotic stories

The only successful ones are stories that combine a love story with a violent backdrop

Think Romeo & Juliet or Titanic

We simply experience romance & eroticism too differently
Think about it:

What are erotic stories for women like?

They look like 50 shades of Grey

Long stories about a highly emotionally spiked seduction

A rollercoaster ride of emotions with some sex sprinkled in

The suspense is everything, very little actually happens
What are erotic stories for men like?

Porn

Simple, to the point, linear

A lot of visual action but with no character development

Emotions play no role in the story

The entire plot is about having as much rough sex as possible and then having the biggest orgasms possible
Conclusion:

These are some of the biggest differences in what men & women value

Not just in stories but also in life, in friendships, dating and sex

If you want to learn how to create erotic stories that will make women come back for more
