Unpopular opinion: I've read many people here stating that even if someone speaks 8 languages but they are all Western Romance languages, then they don't deserve to be called "polyglots".
The definition of "polyglot" is a person who speaks multiple languages (usually 6 or more, according to some sources). Does it say anywhere that they have to be "difficult" or from different language families? No.
So, if they speak several languages fluently, they ARE polyglots. If someone speaks Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician, French, Italian, Asturleonese and Sardinian, they are already speaking 8 languages. What's the debate there?
The argument "but they're too easy to learn when you already know a few of them" is a nonsense to me. Yes, it is way easier than learning an Eastern Romance language, a Slavic language or an Asian language, of course. I'm not trying to deny that.
But let people enjoy things! You sound so bitter and cruel when you try to diminish people because they just learnt whatever they liked... Mind your own business. Wanna learn something more impressive? Go ahead, don't bully others for not doing it.
Instead of believing that you are superior for learning a "difficult" language (because that's clearly the ideology that hides behind that statement), support people who decide to learn whatever they fancy.
If they love the Western Romance branch, then they're not going to learn, for example, Finnish or Hungarian just to make you think they're intelligent, lol.
Some of you just want profit and recognition and it shows. Do you really enjoy learning languages, or do you actually struggle trying to learn really the most complex ones just because you want people to bow at your feet? 😂
I thought that the language learning community was chill and kind, but I've seen many people like this. Stop being so selfish and egocentric, please. You don't have the hugest brain in the world for learning an "exotic" (lol) language, >
> the rest are not "dumb" just because you say so, learn some values and humility.
And I say this as a person who is learning a Slavic language and an Eastern Romance language (with influences from Slavic and Turkic languages, as well as Hungarian). Just in case someone decides to attack me after this. 😂 Or aren't they difficult enough either?
Well, I'm sorry then, but those are the ones I like. Sorry for not having earned your respect, I guess. 😂 And, no, I don't consider myself a polyglot and I don't learn languages for that purpose, but just for fun.
