Gotta admit my frustration with this opinion. We don’t put “NEIPA” or “West Cost” on our IPAs because they are bad descriptors. https://twitter.com/thirsty_pilgrim/status/1259628556038135809
For starters, both are geographic descriptions that describe impossibly large “styles” that are at most 20 years old. They just don’t have that much history behind them.
But more importantly, what do they even mean? What style is my dry, clear, neutral ferment, Citra/mosaic, no bitterness IPA? What is my Mosaic/Motueka/Mandarina, Cloudy, high bitterness IPA?
Neither West Coast nor NE do either of those beers justice. We struggle constantly to make sure the beer in the can matches what someone is looking for when they buy it, but both “Wish it was hazy” and “wish it was west coast” are now just ways of saying “not for me.”
