#OTD in 1864, the Battle Of Yellow Tavern is fought. Union Cavalry led by General Philip Sheridan would fight against General JEB Stuart's Confederate Cavalry in Henrico County, Virginia. #CivilWar
Sheridan had been wanting to stick it to Stuart for awhile & had been at odds with Meade to do so. Sheridan went directly to Grant asking to let the Cavalry Corps be an independent unit...& also go kick Stuart's ass.

Grant say yes.

Sheridan to Meade...

#CivilWar
During the Battle of Yellow Tavern, Stuart is badly wounded. It is a private from the 5th Michigan Cavalry named John A. Huff that shoots him with a .44-caliber revolver. Huff is a former sharpshooter.

Another thing about him? He's Canadian.

#CivilWar
Stuart will die of his wounds the next day in Richmond, VA.

Private Huff, the man who shot Stuart, will also not live long after. He will be badly wounded at the Battle of Haw's Shop 3 weeks later & die soon after.

He is buried in Willow Grove Cemetery in Armada County, MI.
