The most important thing to be aware of when thinking about kink, is consent. As a community we work hard to make sure that consent is willingly given, continually checked & that the person giving consent is educated about what they're taking part in - risks as well as rewards!
Aka - "Informed Consent". You will often hear this referred to as "Safe, Sane & Consensual" or "Risk Aware Consensual Kink".

If consent isn't willing, informed or continuing, it is not BDSM, this is abuse. We do not condone or tolerate abuse.

I genuinely believe that society as a whole would be better off if they adopted the type of in depth consent communications that happen within bdsm, as it would lead to more open, intimate relationships, and far safer sexual encounters.

#LetsTalkConsent
This method should be taught in all sex education classes in order to teach consent from the ground up, from a young age.

I've been asked for resources to learn more, so here's some recommended by those in my kink group, as positive influences:
Non fiction BDSM resources:

Screw the Roses, Send me the Thorns
The Loving Dominant
The Topping Book
The Bottoming Book
Consensual Sadomasochism
SM 101
Fictional BDSM resources:
The Suncoast Society series by Tymber Dalton explores lots of aspects of kink, within a kink community that abides strongly to the safe, sane & consensual tenants of bdsm. Great reading for newbies to the scene.
Our group's resident author, Philippa, writes excellent erotica, sometimes exploring the darker side of life & kink + issues of consent, & her work has tried to break down the damaging stigma/toxicity around female sexuality.
