I know we tend to joke about the "ADHD tax" like, "oh oops I have to pay a library fee now, lol," but I wouldn't be surprised if it also screws people up REALLY BAD, and it's just not talked about. Because financial shame is a bitch.

I mean, it's one thing to say, "Yeah, I filed for bankruptcy because I had medical bills and unforeseen medical hardship."

It's another to say, "I had no tangible reason other than I was just bad at managing my finances."

Because it's not just late fees. It can be compulsive shopping. It can be interest. It can be forgetting to log into your account. Then it can become ignoring your account because looking at it gives you anxiety. (Emotional dysregulation.)
And if avoidance is your default coping mechanism? Hoo boy that can snowball fast.

I also just remembered my psychologist, that specializes in adult ADHD, told me it's actually not uncommon for patients that come to him to admit that they're far behind on their taxes.
