A little Thread about Gon & Killua‘s different subtle foreshadowed interpretations of friendship which has lead to the big turning point in Episode 116 and to the final separation of their journey in the end:
An important aspect about Gon‘s character is that he is constantly interfering in problems of his friends even if they don‘t ask for it.
This can be espacially seen with Kurapica in the York New and Killua in the Zoldyck family arc

However if Gon is having a personal problem, he doesn‘t let his friends help him which can be proven in his fight against Pitou where he choose to fight Pitou alone and not with Killua.
The reason for his interpretation roots in his mentality that Gon is constantly blaming himself when someone dies because of him. Good examples are when he thought the bear mother died because of his interference or when he was blaming himself for Kite‘s death in the CA.
Gon‘s biggest fear with his revenge is that his best friend eventually might die solely because of him which caused Gon building an emotional barrier to Killua and not letting Killua fight alongside him.
He didn’t intent to insult Killua, he wanted to protect him in his own way.
He didn’t intent to insult Killua, he wanted to protect him in his own way.
That doesn‘t really sound egoistic at all which is the reason I hate the take that Gon was acting selfish in 116 and in the Palace Invasion in general. No he was just a confused and mentally breaked down child acting out of his personal intepretation of friendship.
So anyways that was Gon‘s mindset. To fully understand why the actual good intended sentence of Gon in the CA hurt Killua so much, we have to go deeper into Killua‘s characteristics and his personal view of what a friend is.
Killua decided to quit his assassin lifestyle to try a „normal“ one as he was only a child seeking for a heart-warming component in his dark path of solely killing.
He wanted to prove his family wrong, that he could find a real „friend“, which he in fact did in Gon.
He wanted to prove his family wrong, that he could find a real „friend“, which he in fact did in Gon.
This explains his strong emotional attachment regarding the friendship of him and Gon.
So anyways Killua‘s interpretation of friendship is to give everything, even if it means his own life, in order to protect his best friend Gon and therefore proving his family wrong.
So anyways Killua‘s interpretation of friendship is to give everything, even if it means his own life, in order to protect his best friend Gon and therefore proving his family wrong.
This can be for example seen when he wanted to sacrifice himself so that Gon could escape in the scene where Gon and Killua were locked up by Nobunaga and the only way to escape was confronting him.
Killua constantly try‘s to prove to himself that he is a good friend to Gon with focussing (and if he has to: sacrificing) himself to help Gon in any way which is the reason why he was so extremely happy (inside) in the Dodgeball match when Gon said that Killua
is the only one he can entrust to hold the ball even if meant destroying Killua‘s body which was Killua‘s literal wish.
In this moment Killua could confirm to himself that he was a friend of Gon as he felt accepted as a friend by Gon based on Killua‘s interpretation of friendship
In this moment Killua could confirm to himself that he was a friend of Gon as he felt accepted as a friend by Gon based on Killua‘s interpretation of friendship
However Killua’s feeling of being finally accepted as Gon’s friend turned out to be rejected by Gon in episode 116 (in Killua’s eyes).
In Episode 116 their interpretations of friendship finally clashed.

Killua wants to fight and die alongside Gon fighting Pitou because he thinks that it’s his duty as a „friend“ while Gon didn‘t let Killua interfere in his own personal revenge of Kite as he sees Killua as a „friend“ aswell who he can‘t let die just because of his own revenge.
Therefore Killua didn’t felt accepted as a „true friend“ by Gon.
So Killua’s whole way of life to prove the ideology of his family wrong finding a real friend was the one which was proven wrong in the end (in Killua‘s eyes).

This destroyed Killua mentally which can be seen in his breakdown before Palm later on.
Killua was so deeply hurt that later on in the story he even recited Gon‘s quote in a similar way many times.

So in the end you can see that this ideological conflict of friendship between Gon & Killua was determined to happen sooner or later because of their (kinda) contrary interpretations which were foreshadowed subtly throughout all of HxH.
Neither of them were egoistic, they were only children who faced this determined conflict, but anyways the consequence of Killua’s pain (in combination to finding a new goal with protecting Alluka) was (were) the final reason(s) for Killua to take a break from Gon.
