Happy Monday! For no reason other than wanting to spread good films, I'm going to tweet out a still a day from films by female directors who are telling (mainly) working class stories. Directors are British / mixed / dual heritage because that's what I know about!
First up, from one of my favourite directors, Antonia Bird. The still from her film SAFE (1993) You can watch it in full on YouTube.
Day 2: Penny Woolcock. Her work typically blends fiction and documentary. The still here is from my favourite of hers, Tina Goes Shopping (1998). It's on YouTube.
Day 3: Kim Longinotto. Her docs focus entirely on people on the fringes, nearly always women. Her work should be approached with caution, the stories she illuminates are never easy to watch. Dreamcatcher is a great introduction to her work, available on multiple VOD platforms
Day 4. Destiny Ekaragha. Throughout many of her films, Ekaragha often uses humour to tackle issues around masculinity, class and identity within black communities. Her film, Tight Jeans (2008) is one of my favourite short films ever. You can watch it on her YouTube channel
