Opinions of a Master's in Cybersecurity from someone who just completed a Master's in Cybersecurity.

A thread. 1/
I never planned on going to grad school. I have a bachelor's in computer science, but learned way more from internships I had than in class lectures.

Staying in school didn't really interest me. I saw grad school as something really smart people did. 2/
So why did I get a Master's?

1. My employer paid for it. ALL of it (it was basically a 45k benefit)
2. It was nearby
3. I would get a raise for getting one
4. My program was hands on, not just theory

Would I have gotten one if any of those 4 things weren't true? No. 3/
What did I get out of the program?

Actually, cool experience. I learned about things like quantum mechanics, web development (something not offered in my undergrad), web security, IDS, network security- all with great professors in a hands-on manner. 4/
Would I recommend getting one?

Depends on the 4 things above. If you have to pay for it, consider if it's an investment in your worth & the only way to get the return. If not, there are other options.

Know if it teaches things you'll use. If not, consider that. 5/
To that point, and overall, it really depends on your position. I got a free Master's from a well-known school, and my employer values the degree. This isn't always the case. Certs, free or very cheap courses, specific hands-on trainings, etc all exist as great options. 6/
!!!!! Important point !!!!

Cybersecurity programs vary greatly. Some are meant for those without technical backgrounds. Mine was not. My foundation courses included algorithms and crypto. Know your background and goals, and choose a program accordingly. 7/
As I've mentioned, I have one blog post about this so far, and have others that will be getting published.

Grad school is a big commitment. Know what you want before making the decision.

If you have any questions, feel free to share them and I'll do my best to help. /fin
