Y’all. I’m not saying this to be harsh. I just want to make sure those who are antiracist really understand... I get that #AhmaudArbery was doing what lots of people do and therefore his murder still isn’t justified. BUT.
I want us to be clear that racists, those who believe in whiteness, are not actually hung up on the details though they say they are. They complain that Mike Brown didn’t really have his hands up. They argue that Travon didn’t really have iced tea and skittles and on and on.
We who believe in justice are always fighting TWO things at once. The current case before us. But also, we are fighting for the humanity of Black people every single time. Saying “I do that” will work in this case and Trayvon’s case and Tamir’s case... but
There may be other cases, where you wouldn’t have been doing the same thing. Or where a crime was committed. Or where the circumstance involve attitudes, reactions, behaviors that aren’t natural for your personality.
So it’s vital to say, “Black people have the right to not die violently because white people decided to be police, prosecutor, judge, jury and executioner- all in a matter of minutes in the middle of the street, park, parking lot, homes, stores ANYWHERE.
The question isn’t “do white people also do this?” The question is do white people still have control over the existence of Black people as they’ve had for centuries?
Or will we finally fight for Black people to be human, to make mistakes, to be curious, to mind their business, to be annoying, to fight back and still receive a just treatment?
I’m back! I just want to repeat. It’s NOT WRONG to normalize what Arbery was doing. We do need to do more acknowledging of the “crimes/suspicious things” we *all* do. I just wanted to take us one step further.
