diy is oddly toxic as a "community". most of the people within the community are great on their own but i think the group brings out the worst in people sometimes.
diy has done lots of good and i don& #39;t want to discredit that, and for the record nothing specific happened (1/?)

but sometimes it really feels to me like a contest of who can one-up each other on which cool underground bands they like or how woke and socially conscious they can be. social consciousness is a 100% positive thing but the constant need to tweet about how much better you are 1/?
makes it feel a lot less genuine. the retweeting of graphic videos or insane conspiracy theories just so you can dunk on them doesn& #39;t make you some hero, it feels like exploiting those events and people for RTs and likes. again for the record: this isn& #39;t a dig at anyone specific
it& #39;s not a specific person that i saw do something, this is just something ive seen both within and outside of diy and its been getting under my skin
i am also sick of the double standards people give to the dumbass art vs artist debate. please at least be consistent. i dont have any real firm position on it other than "don& #39;t give money to shitbags" but it annoys me seeing constant posts about how bad it is to listen to X band
...and immediately posting about another band with shitty people in it as if nothing& #39;s wrong. there& #39;s no difference between listening to like, brand new and led zeppelin or whatever. either be consistent in your messaging or stop trying to preach
i want abusers the fuck out of this scene just as much as everyone else does and i& #39;m not saying "it& #39;s morally good to support jesse lacey", just please... if you preach no exceptions, you should mean it
i personally don& #39;t listen to abusers and i don& #39;t really have anything to say on the topic other than just... either be consistent or admit you have complex views. it& #39;s a complex topic and nobody should blame someone for not having all the answers
anyways, i love diy and i want it to grow and be a place with less dumb infighting and judgey exclusion of people who don& #39;t fit the perfect mold of "diy". i love the scene i just wish it was a more mature space for people to have discussions rather than immediate judgements
im very bad at phrasing things so if anything i said in this thread sounded incoherent or offensive, please reach out and ill explain my views and talk ! i welcome discussion and ik this is a really rambly thread i made while sleep deprived that goes all over the place
much love to all of you, i just had this on my mind and wanted to get that out somehow
