Part of trying break generational curses is unlearning and trying to be better than what your parents have already put in you. For better or worse, I realize I am a product of them and just as I have inherited some of their most redeeming qualities, I’ve also inherited—
Some of their less admirable traits as well. The current process is getting to a point where I can learn from both their positive and negative examples so that I can be better for my own kids one day while I’m still young before I get too old and set in my ways.
It’s hard too because my parents are people I admire greatly and respect dearly. But obviously they are products of their own parents as well. And especially with black families, a lot times we’re still picking up the pieces and doing what we can with what we’re given.
They say it’s a marathon and not a sprint, but in my eyes it’s more like Relay race. You do your best with the short time that you’re given so you can put the next person in a better position once you pass the baton. You might not be the one to cross the finish line yourself but
You had an important role in the overall success of your “team” so their victory is also your victory. You just gotta make sure you rub your best race while the baton is in your hand.
