(1/8)I am so happy I want to share my frist Twitter thread: I present you a new species of pistol shrimp, Triacanthoneus blanca 😍 named after me by Arthur Anker @ufg_oficial, a world-renowned expert on caridean shrimps! It is on @Zootaxa issue front page! https://www.mapress.com/j/zt/article/view/zootaxa.4772.3.2
(2/8) During my postdoc at @odealab @stri_panama, I participated in a short expedition to #CoibaNationalPark, Panama organised by @Matt_Leray and Jarrod. There, I collected this species of small whitish shrimp while diving with Matt. It was an amazing team and I learnt a lot.
(3/8) We spent many hours searching for pistol shrimps. It opened a new world for me! They have a big claw. When it snaps, it pushes a jet of water, resulting in a flash lightsonic shockwave. The latter can kill small prey. Have a look at this cool video:
(4/8)Many species remain undiscovered, even in #CoibaNationalPark, declared a world heritage site by UNESCO due to its huge biodiversity. This is in part due to a lack of funding for taxonomists. Sadly, underpaid or retired people are doing part of the job. https://twitter.com/BlancaFiguerola/status/979844406831394816?s=19
(5/8) One of the resilient taxonomists is Arthur Anker. To safe taxonomy, he suggests to create more permanent jobs for taxonomists and provide support for museums and training for students. Thus, it is crucial governments invest more in basic science!
(6/8) As this park was once a penal colony and then it was established as a national park in 1991, it is relatively pristine. However, it is threatened by illegal fishing, warming and other anthropogenic stressors as in many other Marine Protected Areas. https://twitter.com/BlancaFiguerola/status/1101115982796505089?s=19
(7/8) Coiba has been studied for more than 30 yrs by @stri_panama researchers. However, we know very little about its past. One of the ongoing projects of @odealab aims to explore its millennial history. To achieve it, we planned an expedition last year. https://twitter.com/odealab/status/1053709105448280064?s=19
(8/8) Thanks to this great team, we successfully collect many cores! Hopefully, its past can provide direction for future conservation of this unique archipelago.
