In the year 1782, the merchants of Pennsylvania of USA fitted an escort ship with 16 guns to fight the British off the Delaware Bay.

They called the ship 'Hyder Ally, after Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore.

George Washington (American), Hyder (Indian), Don Galvez (Spaniard), De Grasse (Frenchman) were all fighting British in the late 18th century.

American Revolutionaries had a keen interest in Hyder and Tipu. For them, the state of Mysore was an ally against the British.

The French saw both American Revolution and Mysore Kingdom as a chance to humble the mighty British.

After losing in the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763), France was too weak to confront Britain head on. So France was playing a cunning proxy war.

American newspapers of the 1780s and ’90s reported on Mysore’s desperate struggle with Britain. Tipu was a cult Hero for the American Revolutionaries.

Jedidiah Morse’s influential The American Universal Geography (1793), included sections on Mysore Kingdom.
