one thing i don’t like about art school discourse- and if you’ve known me for a while, you know i always come back to this- is that a lot of it implies that you can get the same skills from self study
i’ll leave my opinions about everything else aside because i really do see why people have this discussion, BUUUT i’m just saying like. i don’t have $500-700 to buy a membership at the local print studio and tinker around on presses that cost thousands and thousands
i think it kinda comes down to stuff in the same vein as “why don’t they teach us to do taxes in high school” and that brings forth the discussion of “is school for learning how to exist in the capitalist machine or is it for nurturing academic and creative interests?”
(which i am also mixed in as someone who 1. did not have proper family support and would have benefited from “practical” life skills courses as a child, but 2. does not want mandatory indoctrination into “your existence is measured in your monetary profit”)
idk how to end this thread but yeah my existence as a 28-year-old undergrad makes me feel weirder and weirder every day so sometimes I Think about this and how my POV on it is probably wildly different than how it would be if i attended college as an 18-20 year old lol
