they were literally property. they were not human. and it benefits none of us—and i wager that it deeply taunts our ancestors—to pretend that this is not true.

and the real gag is that trying to apply this “human” first language to the experiences and lives of our ancestors keeps them in the same box; on the same boat; in the same fields; beaten by the same whips.
