Luke Skywalker must be the most widely misunderstood hero in popular media.

He's never been an all-powerful "never give up" kind of guy. He gives up easily, complains, and ignores Old Ben & Yoda's advice at every turn.

Throughout the OT, he fails to find victory. https://twitter.com/ScarifPodcast/status/1259227686330916875
There are many examples, but none as persuasive as failing to lift the X-Wing out of the Dagobah swamp in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

In predicting Luke's failure, Yoda says "Always with you it cannot be done."

He was more right than he knew.
Many see Luke as the hero who "never gave up on family", because he rushed to save Han and Leia in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

What's forgotten is this was a failure.

He abandoned his Jedi responsibility and didn't help anyone. An act of hubris, and he paid the price.
In RETURN OF THE JEDI, Luke seems to overcome his propensity for giving up, while nearly falling to the dark side.

This is why Lucas, not Rian Johnson, wrote Luke as a "Kurtz figure" in the treatments sold to Disney, a logical if sad evolution of Luke's strengths and flaws.
So when in THE FORCE AWAKENS (again, not from Rian Johnson) we learn Luke "ran away from everything" after failing Ben Solo, we know it fits.

After Luke's greatest failures, he retreats to lick his wounds until he gets 1.) a kick in the ass 2.) another call to adventure.
THE LAST JEDI is Rian Johnson taking Luke's core characterization in the OT, Lucas' version of Luke in the Disney Treatments *and* THE FORCE AWAKENS.

Fundamentally, it's a movie about Rey (and Yoda) pushing Luke to bounce back and self-actualize his 8 movie arc.
