In the spirit of #Ramadan , I want to discuss forgiving yourself for past sins, moving on, and letting go.

A thread (Islamic View):
I wanted to post this in the hope that it will bring comfort to anyone struggling with guilt of past sins. I know that it can make you feel like a bad person/muslim. It can also make you feel hopeless or worthless but never let these emotions take over.
Below are tips and messages to help you begin the process of forgiving yourself, starting anew, and renewing your faith.
First & foremost, be determined to not commit the sin again. Show true sincerity with honest repentance, no matter how many times you have committed the sin. Allah swt is merciful.
You cannot continue to live with guilt hindering your mental health. When you repent, you are asking for forgiveness from Allah swt. If you hold on to the guilt and obsess over the past, you are doubting the mercy of Allah swt. You must TRUST that Allah swt has forgiven you.
When you repent, you start anew! Start by replacing your feelings of guilt with thankfulness & joy that Allah swt loves you so that you have been guided to repent and even feel the remorse for the sin. This means you are a believer!
Stop replaying and thinking of the past events. Leave them in the past (this is much easier said than done but slowly you will get there inshAllah). When your mind begins to wander to those thoughts, replace them instead with good thoughts. Thoughts of your progress or prayer.
From the Quran 25:70:

"Except for those who repent, believe, and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah forgiving and merciful."

This Ayat shows that even the most major sins (besides shirk) will be forgiven.
When you repented, Allah swt forgave you. It's now time to forgive yourself. Move forward. Start anew. Allah swt loves you.
