this is probably obvious but i’ve noticed a drastic increase in negativity surrounding china in news/social media lately, like blaming china for the coronavirus and claims that the virus “escaped labs in wuhan” (lol); or tweets like the one i (1/?)
just rted that show a video that clearly takes place in china yet praising japan for it (purposefully ignoring china’s efforts to praise japan, which is depicted as the “good” asian country bc it shares the same capitalist system as america). i feel like there is constant (2/?)
negative portrayal of china, constantly jumping from one topic to the next. it only fuels the anti-asian racism in america. like for example i just saw a tweet of a video that shows people cooking bugs, supposedly in china, with scary music in the background; there is (3/?)
no clear proof of where these videos came from, or if they actually take place in china other than chinese text added at the bottom of the screen, or if they’re even real. the tweet got 14k retweets and 99.9% of the replies r spewing disgusting racist bullshit, justifying (4/?)
it on the virus. so obviously there’s a connection here between the constant negativity surrounding china to portray america as the “good guys” and racism towards chinese people, and furthermore east asian people. there’s so much anti-china propaganda and not all of it is (5/?)
blatant: for example, my last rt (a video that is clearly set in china by the chinese letters in the background, showing a boy being thoroughly sanitized for protection against the coronavirus, yet the caption praises japan) is a good example. i’m not gonna lie and say that (6/?)
i’ve never fallen for this kind of thing, like i remember back when the coronavirus was new and there were only cases in china, i was very mad at the anti-asian racism in america that had been fueled by the virus, yet at the same time i remember rting a video of a man that (7/?)
claimed to be from wuhan and posted a video discussing how leaders of the chinese government had retreated to an island so as to not deal with the virus. i revisited this video not too long ago and googled the name of this island but didn’t find anything about leaders from (8/?)
the chinese government fleeing there. the caption of the video was also smth along the lines of “this man is risking his life to post his video” and the op of the tweet had made a reply talking about the possibility of the virus originating from a lab and escaping so i (9/?)
doubt the validity of the video lol. now that’s not to say that ur not allowed to criticize the chinese government. u can. and i’m not saying china is a perfect country. but it’s important to check the validity of ur sources and to not trust everything u hear. sorry if (10/?)
this sounds a bit too much like “everything is propaganda!!!” or whatever but this has been on my mind lately, i’m in the process of learning and unlearning what i thought i knew and i’ve seen a bunch of stuff like this lately, so i thought i’d let my thoughts out there. (11/?)
also before i’m done lol i want to add on that i know that it’s probably very obvious that there has been an increase of anti-asian racism in america due to the coronavirus. this thread is meant to point out the normalization and justification of anti-chinese racism and to (12/?)
point out the subtleties of anti-chinese propaganda, and the way that america is ignoring china’s victories to promote the idea that america is the one that has handled the coronavirus situation well and china handled it poorly (when that is really not the case). (13/?)
sorry if this thread is a bit messy, i just wanted to write down my thoughts on what i’ve seen. also sorry on how long this is, i didn’t mean to write a whole essay lmao
