the discussion of game dev degrees is just "well you can't go to other countries unless you have a degree" as if class signifiers of human life are unchangeable material reality.

these businesses recruit people without degrees all the time, it doesn't have to be this way.
companies can easily hire anyone if they want to, they choose to mitigate risk because the process is expensive. it's an investment criteria not a human one people should decide their lives on.
to have a degree for the sake of employment and not education is a tacit admission you're willing to pay the price of viewing yourself as a commodity to gain access to class status and prestige. this is not what degrees are for, they're supposedly a measurement of interest.
"I went to school to learn about x thing, here's proof, so that's why I probably know a lot of x." you can do that with a resume, with your work, too. why is one more valuable than the other?

because one costs a lot of money.
that doesn't tell employers you're good at whatever you do, it just shows you're willing to pay to win or you're privileged enough to not have to worry about resources
a piece of paper that says "I'm one of you, don't worry I won't rock the boat, doesn't matter if I'm good"
this isn't to shun degrees, if you have one for the love of what you studied, good on you. just understand that companies don't see it the way you do.
