I know everybody is napping, but I’ve been thinking about how tough it is mentally for all the people who’ve had their life turned upside down by the coronavirus and the economic meltdown. Hoping I can help at least one.
I’ve been thinking about how it must feel right now for kids in high school or college who are wondering what the world will hold for them. Also thinking about people who have lost jobs and don’t know what’s next. 2/x
A little story time: 9/11 happened right after I graduated from college and I can remember feeling like it was the end of the world. I was so worried about the future and what my prospects would be.
It also left me looking for work in a very tough job market. I had just graduated with an art degree and had no idea what I was doing. I was broke and no one was hiring. Wasn’t feeling great about anything.
A few months earlier I’d answered a listing looking for someone to build a website. I didn’t know what I was doing, so I went to a Barnes and Noble and sat at a table and took notes from a book on HTML. I couldn’t even afford the book.
Then I went to a computer lab on campus and got some help from a few friends who helped me build the site. The check came through and I went out and bought my first computer. I probably owe Barnes and Noble and those friends some money.
Fast forward to 2008. I’d gone to grad school and things were starting to work out and I was feeling like I was going to be ok. And then the economy crashed again.
And again, I didn’t know what was going to happen to me. I was worried about my future and broke again and didn’t know where to start. Luckily, I had a lot of family support and great friends and a lot of encouragement. But most people don’t have that.
I got some amazing breaks along the way that I’ll be forever grateful for. I’ve been thinking all week about how I felt in those low moments and how I just needed a break somehow.
I always said when I was in a different position, I’d look for an opportunity to help out. So, I want somebody who is in school or recently graduated or switching careers or trying to go back to work to hit me up and let me take care of a hurdle right now.
Like maybe you need a laptop for school or maybe you need your internet paid at home. Or they want to take some classes and can’t pay. I’m looking for somebody who is just hoping for a small break and needs somebody to deliver.
I don’t have much, but hop into my DMs and let me know what you’re up against and let’s see if we can take care of it. Be gentle on me if I can’t help everybody.
Feels like I’m stepping on @SheaSerrano’s corner here, so excuse me for the copyright infringement, haha.
