It’s been good to see more HAES/IE accounts discussing the impact of racism. I hope the discussions continue. Because they have been lacking. What we need to do is not go back to apathy but instead;
Read books on racism written by Black people. Some Black British authors who have written on this subject are Afua Hirsch, Akala, Reni Eddo Lodge, Malorie Blackman. I also recommend ‘Me and White Supremacy’ by Layla Saad; this will give you a deep dive into your white privilege.
Read and then be quiet. Seriously. Just listen. Listen to Black people and people of colour. Believe them when they are telling you about their experiences of racism.
We are not required to speak on everything. Our opinion is often not required or not asked for. Thinking that we have to speak on everything is in itself wrapped up in white entitlement. And reject the white saviour complex.
Also reject the need to be a ‘good’ person. If you feel defensive, take @iamerinbrown ‘s advice and sit on your hands until the feeling passes.
Learn to be part of a community without having to centre yourself. We can be supportive, share work, amplify voices without trying to make ourselves the centre of the conversation. Some spaces are simply not for us. And that’s ok! Respect people’s boundaries.
We will fuck up. It’s important to be open to being called in/out and holding ourselves accountable. Being called in is fucking uncomfortable but it’s only uncomfortable. Sit with the discomfort. That’s where we learn to do better.
