Here is my version on #Bulls Michael Jordan's 1st retirement, time with baseball and #NBA return. 1990, MJ was at old Comiskey Park and took batting practice, pitched in the bullpen and roamed the outfield before a game. This pic is from that day, note the uniform. #LastDance
MJ was always available before #Bulls games. A yr before he retired, we talked about baseball. He brought it up asking me, You love baseball, don’t you?" H said he'd play baseball.after basketball. I said "By that time you'll be too old" he smiled and said,"We'll see."
Late fall of 1993, MJ leaves the Bulls. A source from both the #WhiteSox and #Bulls tell me MJ is preparing for baseball. I told me WMVP sports director Jim Modelski about the possible story. For weeks I worked sources.
Called one that worked Sox security, casually asking, when Michael showed up. The response was 10 After a pause the person said, you didn't know that? Told me to not use their name or they'd be fired.
There were other sources that confirmed. Talked to Sox trainer Herm Schneider and GM Ron Schueler. Both admitted MJ was there. During this time I told a friend, Jim O'Donnell, he worked with the Copley News to have a story coordinated with my report on the air.
On Dec 16, 1993, the story came out in print and I reported it live on WMVP-AM during the mid-day talk show. The host, a print columnist, laughed it off, as did the afternoon one. Fortunately, TV broadcaster Tim Weigel did not, he would validate another story too.
My original source called me, gave more info that Michael was at IIT with Michael Huff. There was a press conference there with MJ. It was initiated by Topps card, they had a MJ, Gretzkey & Reggie Jackson card. Putting my recorder on the table Michael said, "You've been busy."
(breaking story)." I asked if he was ok with my reporting, he said "Yes."
Went to spring training and spent time at the batting cage with MJ and Sox hitting coach Walt Hriniak. Talked to Michael after a session, he was upbeat a& exhausted after beginning very early in the am. He also mentioned his awareness to the coverage, especially the negative.
Mar '95, sitting at the Bulls practice facility in Deerfield. The curtain was closed, most of the media had drifted away. But the sound of that practice was a no doubter, Michael was there.
Got a call from Florida about MJ walking out of White Sox camp, another call from a player's friend confirming Jordan was at practice.
Once the media was let in and spoke to Phil Jackson and players, I remained silent. Once the media, Jackson did confirm Michael was there. BJ Armstrong told me about the lively practice. We had it on the air on WMVP and gratefully again, Tim Weigel validated it on the air.
I'm grateful to the people that have realized the work I did in my reporting these stories. Was one of the most exciting, yet difficult time. People at that time did not respect women in electronic media. Especially peers. #LastDance
