So, the entire #BoisLockerRoom blew up with multiple screenshots. Most of us spoke about it, outraged and shared those widely. Many of us moved on too. But in this chaos, a kid lost his life. There were many crucial points we missed. Let me try to highlight them.
We start sharing stuff blindly on internet without verifying the story. By verifying, I don't mean just facts, but also about parties involved, their stories, circumstances and most importantly, age. Result? We forget other person can be innocent too.
But we don't wait to verify that. We simply want to be the first one to "expose" a story. Don't jump the gun without knowing all the sides of the story. It is difficult, and verification before posting will mean we will not get the oh-so-important internet points.
I have been guilty too but I pledge to learn. In this case from a boy's death. In most cases, criminals get lucky only because the victim doesn't take any legal action. Big mistake.
If you're right, fight for it. You will find support from unexpected corners. Your struggle will make life better for many others.
Do not call out people here if you are NOT the affected party. Not on the internet, no. Not if you cannot file a legal complaint for that action. If you want to do something, support the victim, help them file the complaint. But do not call out their perpetrator on their behalf.
Internet activism can be harmful. Do not conduct twitter trials on people by calling them out based on anonymous complaints. We need to motivate people to come out and fight for their rights. We need to support them. But unfortunately, this cannot be done by being anonymous.
I understand the motivation behind calling out people on twitter. We don't want to jump through the hoops of court-kachari and Thana. Calling out here means the person gets exposed, maybe loses his job or simply vanishes from the internet space.
But I hope you understand how dangerous it is. Anybody with more internet clout can destroy somebody's reputation and life without the other person even having a chance to prove themselves. We all have biases and twitter is no place to put somebody's life on the line.
By no means am I saying not to highlight issues important to you. There are lots of events which get coverage due to twitter. But while amplifying an issue is important, passing judgement and acting as a mob is not. People lose their lives, careers, family, friends and what not.
PS: If you think you are targeted unfairly, please contact me. I will give you free advice as a lawyer or point out to the right resources. There are many helpful lawyers on twitter who will give sound advice. Use law. File a complaint. <End>
