Do you know/are you someone who says “matured” when they should say “mature”?

Or “secured” when you should use “secure”?

Do you get confused by adjectives that can also be verbs? Or you just don’t know that some words can do that?

Let’s treat all d’s issues. 😅 #BGwithDawn
So..

Is it “mature” or “matured”, and when should you use what?

Let’s start by defining what adjectives and verbs are.

An adjective is a word that modifies a noun. Adjectives tell you the quality, quantity, or extent of a noun.

Eg: a black car.

BLACK = adjective
CAR = noun
A verb is a word that describes an action.

For example: fly, jump, buy, cook, drive.

To help you remember easily, you can define a verb as a “doing” word. That is, you use it to define or express an action/a deed.

Now that I’ve explained (and you understand) all of that, I’m sure you can easily see the error in making sentences like “Tolu is very MATURED”.

You are explaining how Tolu is, right?

Tolu = name of a person = noun

So, the word you use to modify Tolu MUST be an adjective.
So you say: “Tolu is very MATURE”.

This means that Tolu is physically full grown, or behaves like an adult.

Saying “Tolu is very MATURED” means...

...nothing. It is grammatically incorrect.
If you want to use MATURED by all means, please make sure you replace “is very” with an auxiliary verb (like 'has').

So you’d say: Tolu HAS matured.

But you must know that this changes the meaning of your sentence. :)

This same system/explanation applies to SECURE and SECURED.

- Secure (adjective) = being free from danger. Examples:

The bag is safe and secure ✅
The bag is safe and secured ❌

- Secure (verb) = to make free from danger, to guarantee. Examples:

Secure the bag ✅

- Secured (verb) = past tense of 'secure'. Only use when speaking in the past tense.

This means that you cannot use SECURED (or matured) with AM, IS, ARE.

I planned to do more words, but I feel sleep coming. I hope you learned something!
