*sees SCAD trending* Oh boy
In relation - I recently had a HS student ask if my education (at MICA) had been worth it. For the art-business education I learned, sure. But the rise in cost over the past 15 years since I graduated - no. There are vastly more resources available to artists these days.
Social Media in general has made things vastly easier to obtain knowledge (as long as we as an art community don't gate people and stop being so damn secretive).
To not be secretive, here's some places that do online classes that are helpful/more affordable than uni/college:
Schoolism - https://www.schoolism.com/ different courses for things like drawing, digital painting, lighting, zbrush, oil painting etc, from pros in their respective fields.
Gumroad - https://gumroad.com do searches for illustration or drawing courses, pros are offering them for really great prices!
http://businessofillustration.com/ - insight on the Business of Illustration/resources/where to get promos printed/portfolio reviews/consultations/interviews etc etc etc
Skillshare Illustration classes - https://skillshare.com/search?query=Illustration browse around and learn some extra skills, again from professionals in their fields.
....I'm missing a ton of links and I think I messed up this thread slightly... but these are a few faves and go-to's for basic information to get started. The rest is drawing. A lot. While also drawing things you enjoy. And balancing that ish out.
Ctrl+Paint - https://ctrlpaint.com Free video library that helps teach basic art skills, and then putting them to use in your pieces (and basic digital painting skills)
