At least 44% of all infections--and the majority of community-acquired transmissions--occur from people without any symptoms (asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic ). You can shed the virus for up to 5 days before symptoms begin.

Sitting still doesn& #39;t expel much virus. Speaking expels more. Coughing & sneezing spreads the virus rapidly. "The droplets in a single cough or sneeze may contain as many as 200M virus particles... A single sneeze releases ~30k droplets, with droplets traveling at up to 200 MPH."

A person infected with influenza sitting still releases 3-20 virus RNA copies/minute. Even if every virus ended up in your lungs, you& #39;d need 50 minutes to get 1,000 copies.

But any activity raises the chances an infected person expels virus & you catch it. In one study under peer review, researchers used a model to estimate that a person standing and speaking in a room could release up to 114 infectious doses per hour. You can get infected quickly indoors. If a person coughs or sneezes, those 200M viral particles go everywhere & can hang in the air for minutes. Enter a room soon after a cough/sneeze, take a few breaths & you have potentially received enough virus to establish an infection.

This is an important question as we reopen businesses. Studies show risk everywhere. Cruise ship outbreaks aren& #39;t even in the top 50 outbreaks to date. Nursing homes have obviously been terrible sources of deadly outbreaks.

You probably don& #39;t work in a meatpacking plant, but those are proving very dangerous. As of Friday, 190 meatpacking and processed food plants and four farms have confirmed cases of Covid-19. At least 13k workers have tested positive & 51 have died. ( https://thefern.org/2020/04/mapping-covid-19-in-meat-and-food-processing-plants/)">https://thefern.org/2020/04/m...
Restaurants: One study tracing a single outbreak found that one presymptomatic person infected 9 people from three families who had eaten at the same air-conditioned restaurant in Guangzhou, China. ( https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/7/20-0764_article)">https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/artic...
Open Offices: A single infected employee came to work in a call center. The floor had 216 employees. Over a week, 94 coworkers become infected. Almost all came from one side of the floor--only 5 who sat on the other side of the floor became infected. Indoor sports: An Edmonton curling tournament was held between March 11 and 14. By March 27, at least 24 of the roughly 72 attendees tested positive for COVID-19, and at least one healthcare worker had become infected treating patients. Public restrooms have a lot of high-touch surfaces (door handles, faucets, stall doors). Also, the virus has been found in the feces of COVID-19 patients. We don& #39;t know if the virus in feces can cause COVID-19, but toilet flushing aerosolizes droplets. ( https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/php/water.html)">https://www.cdc.gov/coronavir...

Another study found that homes were the riskiest place (where, if one family member becomes sick, others spend a LOT of time in contact with someone infected.) Shopping was relatively rare (but not zero!) And outdoor transmission was quite rare. ( https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.04.20053058v1.full.pdf)">https://www.medrxiv.org/content/1...
Get outside but be smart. Enjoy the sun. Just do so cautiously! Stay away from others. Wear masks. Social distance.
Socializing w/ a few family & friends should be okay, but don& #39;t throw the ball around, hand beers to others, hug, or sit close together.

And if you run, walk or bike, have a brain and some care for others. Don& #39;t exercise where it may be crowded. Give other people a lot of space. Stay on roads away from crowded sidewalks. Your need for carefree exercise shouldn& #39;t become someone else& #39;s stay in the hospital!

The choir decided to proceed with rehearsal but took precautions: Hand sanitizer at the door, no hugs & handshakes, & everyone brought their own sheet music. They spent 2.5 hours together. 45 got COVID-19, three have been hospitalized, and two are dead. Wear your masks!
Wear your masks, not for you but everyone else. In a 2013 study of the influenza virus, it was found masks produced a 3.4 fold reduction in viral aerosol shedding. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3591312/
