Maddison mostly functions as a #10 where he plays high up the pitch as he constantly looks for space between the defensive and midfield lines where he tries to receive passes. He would action himself to be able to progress the ball upon receiving.
However, Maddison at times collects the ball from deeper areas and tries to dictate play during buildup when his side is recycling possession. He features in a midfield three playing centrally. Maddison out of the three has the most freedom to change his positioning.
The English midfielder has superb technical ability; A good first touch, vision and passing accuracy is a must for any successful playmaker and Maddison is strong in all of these areas. His ability to break low blocks by sliding passes into gaps between defenders is efficient.
From a total of 27 matches, Maddison had 17 of his shots on target. He is currently 6 goals with an 0.20xG p90. James Maddison is deadly at set pieces scoring more than anyone since the start of last season. He has 3 assists this season with a passing accuracy of 83%.
Maddison’s role is tactically versatile. Mostly played as a #10, Maddison has played a number of games elsewhere. He has played as an 8 and has played the left wide position too. He is most effective as a #10 and shouldnt be playing any where else. He is pretty poor as a LW.
Maddison defensive contribution has increased dramatically this season. He has made 149 ball recoveries this season already doing completing more than his 126 last season. Maddison averages 1.9 tackles and 0.9 interceptions per game. Thats 44 tackles and 9 interceptions.
In terms of dribbling, Maddison makes 3.68 dribbles per 90 with a success of 60%. He makes about 1.3 progessive runs per game, with 2.3 touches of the ball in the box in the same time frame. He loses the ball 11.14x per 90 which mostly occurs in the opposition half.
All in all, Maddison is one of the most underrated players around nowadays. He receives unwanted hate and people are starting to believe that Grealish is better which is utterly false. Maddison has created 75 chances this season which is more than any other player but De Bruyne.
I personally think Maddison would be perfect for Arsenal. He was wanted by the club last year so i wouldn’t be surprised if they come back for him this summer. He would be a very good replacement for Özil. Arteta deploys 4-2-3-1 which would be perfect to accommodate Maddison.
