In April 2008, Sven Ulreich, then 19 years old, committed a series of errors in Stuttgart's 3-0 loss against Bayer Leverkusen. After the game, he was blamed for the loss by coach Armin Veh.
When he got home, Ulreich was called by Germany GK Robert Enke, who analyzed his game, gave him advice on how to improve, and encouraged him not to give up. Enke had been in a similar position years earlier.

Ulreich: "When I got off the phone, I had goosebumps."

When Robert Enke played under Louis Van Gaal at Barcelona, he was publicly lambasted by Van Gaal following a poor game, and he was eventually dropped from the first team.

Enke was aware of the mental toll football can take on youngsters and sought to protect Ulreich.
Unfortunately, Robert Enke had long battled depression and eventually committed suicide in November of 2009. He remains fondly remembered by the football community as a great goalkeeper and, more importantly, a wonderful, thoughtful and caring person.
